Yea! So I finally got a new dvd release worth talking about!!!
Yes, 'Bride Wars' is a chick flick. But a really entertaining chick flick!
It stars Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. The latter we know is a very good actress since she was nominated for an Oscar last year. (However, I didn't even deem the movie, 'Rachel Getting Married' worth talking about. She was good, but the movie... not so much.) I'm a big Kate Hudson fan because I love her mom, Goldie Hawn. I loved Goldie as a child on 'LaughIn' and remember someone mentioning that she was very smart for playing the dumb blond. That was a unique idea to me and I've followed her 'smart' career ever since. Her daughter, Kate, however, skipped the 'dumb blond' thing and jumped right into a full fledged acting career. I think we'll see bigger and better things from her as she and her acting skills mature.
'Bride Wars' is about two young women who have been best friends their whole lives and dreamed about their weddings at the Plaza their whole lives. Until... they are mistakenly both booked for the same wedding day at the Plaza. When neither of them will agree to back down and have their wedding at a different location, the hi jinx ensues. The two best friends begin to play pretty ruthless tricks on one another until it culminates in a wedding tackle! They of course realize that they can't live without each other and at the last minute, one of them decides she can live without the guy she was about to marry!
The wonderful and oh so true message from 'Bride Wars' is that sometimes that one person that you share your whole life with might not be a husband, but instead a best friend. It made me appreciate my BFF that much more!! Love you!!
By the way, this one is safe for the kids... except they might pick up some pranks!
This will be a good one for your collection, so you can click below to order:

I Was A Male War Bride ****
Since I've been feeling deprived of good funny movies lately, I reverted back to one of my all-time favorites for a laugh recently.
"I Was A Male War Bride" is from 1949 starring Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan, and directed by Howard Hawks. It's about a French officer guy (Grant) who marries an American officer girl (Sheridan). When she is quickly being sent back to the States, the only way they could figure out how to get him back with her was the War Bride provision. As you might expect, some hilarity ensues here including Grant in drag! But what you might not expect is that there's hilarity throughout this one, even before the 'war bride' thing!
Cary Grant is one of my favorite actors in anything he ever did. And 'I Was A Male War Bride' is definitely one of my favorite of his' comedies. It's one that will have you sitting there chuckling the whole time with occasional belly laughs. It's one of my favorite lesser known classics.
Another reason I like this one is that it's based on a true story... what a great story! I'd love to know sometime how much of it is and isn't fact??? I wasn't able to find any info on the real Henri Rochard.
It's on Netflix instant view until 4/30/09, and I think on TCM sometime this month.
You should buy it now...

Swing Vote ***
So I finally saw 'Swing Vote'.
Kevin Costner's not really at the top of my list. There were some moments in 'Dances With Wolves', but he's just not one of my favorites.
However, he did a good job as a slacker dad with the fate of the world in his hands. He didn't even intend to vote, but it turns out that the outcome of the US presidential election is entirely up to him casting his ballot. That's the story! That's pretty much it...
There are several other good performances in the movie, namely the kid who plays his daughter. But the point of the movie (and it came out in theaters in the fall, before elections) is to impress the importance of voting on all of us. So, be sure to put this one in front of the people who think that their vote isn't important.
All in all, it's just pretty good. Ok for the kids.
If you're a voter, you probably could skip it. But, if you know someone who thinks their vote doesn't count, then just non-chalantly watch it with them!

The Wrestler ***
'The Wrestler'.... I was so excited....
Ok, so it's a well written story about an aging wrestler who has nothing but wrestling. Well, he does have an occasional love interest in a nearby stripper???
After suffering a heart attack and realizing his loneliness, he retires, gets a job at a deli counter and tries to reunite with family. However, when the stripper rejects him again because she doesn't want a relationship with a customer, he soon jumps back into the ring. It's the only place where he is welcomed.
In case you didn't know, I'll never give a really sad movie too much of a review. You see, if I'm going to spend a couple of hours of my life on something, I really want to feel good in some kind of way! I'm not saying that I only like 'happy' movies... I'm saying I want to feel good! I can feel good watching a shoot 'em up movie!
There was nothing to feel good about in 'The Wrestler'! There was nothing about his life that was better than mine in any way! It was sad, sad, and then sad!
So if you like sad stories, this is it for you!! Well done sad story, but really sad!
As for the acting... YES Mickey Rourke deserved accolades for this one. He did a great job, and I totally could believe him as a Hulk Hogan type. Hey, the Ram should get a reality show!!
(And I have to like Mickey Rourke because he thanked his dog in his acceptance speech at the Golden Globe awards. Yeah, he was probably on something, but you've got to love a guy who loves his dog!!!)
Marisa Tomei........ she's the stripper..... she's pretty much totally naked in this movie..... Holy crap!! She's my age (40ish), and she's still hot enough to be stripping on camera??? Rah for you Marisa!! You looked amazing!!
Ok, so her acting was really great as well, and as can be expected from her. She's never let me down. Whatever she's playing, she's totally believable! Love her!
As for the kids, pay attention!! Naked stripper!! No!!

Dark Matter **1/2
Ok, so I was kind of excited about 'Dark Matter'. A film about dark matter, cosmology and all of that stuff. I find it all very intriguing, even though I'm eventually lost in the theory.
The movie is about a young Chinese graduate student that comes to the US to follow his dream of studying dark matter and winning the Nobel Prize. All is well, until the professors become less than receptive to his ideas. When he doesn't pass his doctoral dissertation, he goes off the deep end. What a drag! He had so much promise!
Meryl Streep plays a nice supporting role as a wealthy benefactor/friend.
There is a scene in a coffee shop where he is trying to have a love connection and ends up explaining God to the girl quite beautifully. (I got excited for a minute.) The universe, like God, has no beginning and no end. So maybe our idea of God as an old man with a beard can be changed to universe is God! Dark matter is God??? Maybe the perception we have of the old man is just one that we have always been able to relate to since we've always had fathers!
The proposition of discussing God as universe was short lived, however, and we just went down a sad path with a lonely Chinese boy.
Not a great movie...
It's fine for the kids, except for the shootings, but they would be really bored otherwise!

Donkey Punch - AWFUL
Ok, I heard 'Donkey Punch' was British and after learning the hidden meaning of the title... I was sure it had to be a raunchy comedy.
NOT at all! It's a horrible, messed up story that neither you nor your kids should watch!
Seven twenty something's go out on a boat, take some drugs, and have wild sex (pretty explicit too). The snag is that the sex is a little too wild and somebody dies. It them turns into paranoia and killing. It was like a porn turned horror movie!!! And to be honest, I couldn't even finish it. When she got out the chainsaw near the end, I'd had enough.
SO, my excitement about a good British comedy quickly turned into disgust last night.
Honestly the only people who could like 'Donkey Punch' are those who are really into porn and horror movies.
For the rest of us thinking non-freaks, it was AWFUL!!!
So no link today. I can't in good conscience really suggest anybody buy this! Stay away!!!

Doubt ***1/2
I watched 'Doubt' several days ago. I've taken a little while to mull it over and I still have not come to any inspiration about the film. It's really sad...
Ok, so Meryl Streep and the entire cast did an exceptional job in all of the roles. I felt as if I were in a Catholic school in the '60s. So that's a job well done.
The plot revolves around Streep's suspicion of a priest and his possibly inappropriate relationship with a male student. In the end, we get no real resolution on this matter... doubt!
The priest just goes on to the next parish... to do it again???
As for the kids, it's probably ok for them to watch, but the subject matter is really too grown up for me... So just spare them this one.
I think that this movie disturbed me a little more than most because I know someone who WAS molested by a Catholic priest in the '60s... someone without a father. It hurt me and enraged me to see this portrayed... for all of those boys! I was with Streep's character from the beginning.
I'd probably make a great crabby old nun!

Bedtime Stories ***1/2
Does anybody hate Adam Sandler?? If so, I've never met them.
Again, he gives us another great performance in a really nice kid movie! Yes, it's totally safe for the kids!
In Bedtime Stories, Adam Sandler's character is asked to babysit his neice and nephew at night while his sister looks for a job. He starts telling them bedtime stories that he creates based on himself. They never like his endings, however, and always come up with their own grand finales' to the bedtime stories. The next day, the stories start coming true! By the end of the movie, he gets career validation and the girl. Also stars Keri Russell and Courtney Cox.
All in all, Bedtime Stories was a very nice fantastical movie that all of the kids will enjoy, including YOU!

Yes Man ****
I'm not a huge fan of Jim Carrey, so putting this one in... I was a little less than excited.
That changed! It turned out to be one that I really like!
The thing that I liked most about the movie was not the acting, story or even the sure to be present stupid Carrey-type comedy. It was the concept of the movie that I liked.
Carrey is a guy who is invited to a crazy seminar resembling a televangelist meeting. The seminar encourages everyone to say 'yes' to life. If you're not saying 'yes' to opportunity, then you're not living, so you're dead!! The main character is sort of forced to take this to heart and Carrey takes this as 'yes' to everything and you can imagine the crazy things he gets into, including a Persian wife, a new homeless friend, and of course a new girl. But at the end, he realizes that he should say 'no' if he doesn't want to do something. (I think I would have gotten this a lot sooner, but it would've been a boring movie!)
About mid-way through, I realized that there was a much bigger message in this movie than it would have you believe. We have all become so accustomed to saying 'no'! We have caller id so we say no to calls we sometimes shouldn't. We say no online with the click of a little box. We are all so accustomed to saying 'no'! Are we sliding into the boring 'non-life' of this character?
AND, this one really is PG-13... probably even ok for most younger kids.
I must admit that 'Yes Man' really did strike a chord with me and I'm going to try to say 'yes' more!! (unless I don't want to!)

The Beautiful Truth ****
Another one that I enjoyed on my Netflix instant queue!!
(Again, get with it and click the link up there!!!)
This is a documentary about a boy who, for a home school project, investigates nutrition. He read a book by Dr. Max Gerson and was inspired by the findings of a doctor 60-70 years ago! Dr. Gerson claims to have cured many different diseases through nutrition, including cancer and tuberculosis. And through the boy's journals, the film was made to spread the word!!
(How cool is that! A high school kid is changing the world!)
This was soo up my alley!! I'm a huge advocate of nutrition and have reaped the benefits of this knowledge in my own life. So watch this movie and save yourself!!
And, since none of us really eat right, I'm also a huge vitamin advocate. So, if you need some, you can check out what I use at the two links below. (Which I use depends on how much money I have at the time. Obviously, I think the more expensive one is better!)

Friends and Family ***1/2
This is one that I watched on my Netflix instant view over the weekend.
(If you don't do Netflix, get with it and click on it at the top!!!)
The movie is about two gay guys who are the strong arms for a mafia guy. The comedy ensues when parents come to visit. There are some twists and turns, and silly humor the whole way.
It's a funny little movie, worth the time.
For the kids, it's not too bad... some gay humor. But it's not what the whole movie is about!
The kids probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway, but you would. It's a nice getaway!

Seven Pounds **
I love Will Smith... really hate giving him two stars!!!
In a nutshell, this movie is about a guy who kills seven people in a traffic accident and decides to kill himself in order to give his organs to seven needy people. And he finds love along the way.
Ok, even though I don't like the premise of the story, I think I could make it work in a movie!! The problem here is that the movie was obviously edited to death!! I hate when this happens! There are so many loose ends, I can't begin. I don't even know why the movie is named 'Seven Pounds'!!!! (I'm guessing that's the weight of his heart?? Anybody??)
So, don't let your kids watch it because the premise of the movie is crazy!
And you shouldn't watch it because you have better things to do!!
Sorry Will!

Marley & Me ***
Just so you know, I watched this days ago and have been struggling with it.
Giving it three stars is something of a stretch for me.
It's a movie about the life of the dog, Marley, and his effect on his family.
The basis of the movie is that the dog dad, played by Owen Wilson, starts writing a newspaper column about his life... which is mostly about Marley.
So, the movie kind of feels like you're reading his columns.
It's a nice story and very well acted by Wilson and co-star Jennifer Aniston, but it's just not that great. I think if I'd been an avid reader of the columns, I may have been disappointed by the movie. Not a big surprise.
All in all, it's ok for a Sunday afternoon... for you and the kids.

Slumdog Millionaire *****
Finally, a movie I can get excited about!!
There isn't even anything 'wrong' with 'Slumdog Millionaire' for me to point out!!!
Ok, so I may be the only person in the world that didn't see this at theaters. But, as is my normal custom, I waited for the dvd release. This time, I'm actually a little sorry I waited! (that never happens!)
In 'Slumdog Millionaire', the story at the forefront is Jamal's big win on the game show 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. He is immediately accused of cheating. As Jamal recounts all of the 'whys' as to 'why he knew each answer', we are included on his entire life story up to the present. I love the way they did this!! It's not just story-telling, but layered story-telling, and brilliantly done!!
The thing that enriches the plot even more, is that it's in India. (Do they really have the gameshow there?) It being in India brings another element to the story. An important one. Jamal's recanting of his impoverished and traumatic life there succeeds in making us love him more than we probably would had he been from anywhere else. I felt Jamal's desperation; his feeling of having essentially nothing and nowhere to go. I felt his helplessness as he tried and tried to help the girl he loved. And most importantly, I felt his joy whenever anything worked out for him.
Also, in wonderful Bollywood fashion, there was a great whole cast dance scene during the ending credits. (Although this isn't really a 'Bollywood' film, I'm glad they threw that in. Makes for even more of a happy ending!!)
Also, I think most teenagers who have ever played a video game would be fine to watch this. There is a good bit of violence, but no nudity except for a kid's behind. There are also several references to prostitution and sexuality, but it's not a huge factor.
It's totally ok for my mature 15 year old daughter.
All in all, 'Slumdog Millionaire' really is an exceptional film from beginning to end that delivers everything you want in a wonderful movie experience.
It will be a classic!
SO, this time I'm telling you to go ahead and buy it below. You will sooner or later!
