Whip It ***1/2

'Whip It' stars Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore and many other faces you'll recognize. It's also Barrymore's directorial debut.

I like Drew Barrymore a lot. I'm sure she's done something bad in her 30+ year acting career, but I really haven't seen it. Sure, she's done things I could criticize, but nothing really all around 'bad'. And it seems that lately, she's all about the 'feel good' movies. I'm liking that, so I was excited to see what she could do as a director.

'Whip It' is about a girl who decides to play roller derby. Huh?? Roller derby?? People still do that?? Ok, so that bothered me a good bit, but for Drew, I was still excited. And amazingly, she pulled it off for me! I even got into the roller derby thing! And of course, there's a lovely family story with really a few good life lessons.

It's rated PG-13, and rated well I think. For younger kids, there's some bad language and some adult kind of themes, but for teenagers, I think it would be ok. It's entertaining and does present some good moral themes for the unruly pubescents.

A surprisingly good watch!

Moon **1/2

'Moon' stars Sam Rockwell. It looked kind of interesting from the description, and it got some attention at different Indie awards....

Well, it's about a man who has spent time working on a lunar space station and he's about to get to come home... until you find out about their evil plan!

'Moon' was pretty good, but I had a big problem with it. I felt extremely claustrophobic the entire time I was watching it. So, I guess in that sense, they did a very good job with realism. But it was very uncomfortable for me to watch. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

It's ok for the kids, but they could really skip it!

The Burning Plain ***

'The Burning Plain' stars Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger among others.

I really wasn't expecting to love this movie since the reviews were not great. Well, I didn't love it but I did like it.

It basically tells the story of a girl and all of the lives that she affects over the years. You don't really get this at first because it's fragmented. You are given different parts of the story at different times. It is not cohesive in any way. However, the non-cohesiveness of it makes it sort of amusing to put together. Well done.

This isn't one for the kids. Chances are they wouldn't even be able to pay attention for long enough to have a clue what it's about. There's also a good bit of nakedness here and there.

' A Perfect Getaway' **1/2

'A Perfect Getaway' stars Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn.

This is a nice little suspense about a couple honeymooning in Hawaii with killers on the loose. It was pretty good except for one thing... There was no bait. In the end when you find out who the killers were, you're shown flashbacks that make it make sense at the end. But watching in real time, we got no clues?? There was almost no way of guessing. Where's the fun in that?

So, the story was a little lacking for me as far as tying everything together.
Good performances though, and it had promise...

'Beyond a Reasonable Doubt' **

Remake starring Michael Douglas as a corrupt DA who is framed by a reporter.

Good performance by Douglas but the other actors were just not very good. It felt like a TV movie, and a bad one at that.

You can skip it, I think.

(500) Days of Summer **1/2

'(500) Days of Summer' stars Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This one has been nominated for some awards so I was a little excited to check it out.

Summer is the fickle love interest who manages to totally break Gordon-Levitt's heart in 500 days. It's really just a weird, sad little love story except for this one scene where he's totally in love and dances down the street with a crowd of people joining in and animated birds singing, all to an old Hall & Oates tune! That was really good... Otherwise, it was kind of a disappointing, sad story. But thank goodness, they did give us something upbeat at the end!

It's ok for the kids, but I really don't know if it's worth the watch for that one great scene?

'(500) Days of Summer' was just ok, pretty sad... Joseph Gordon-Levitt was really good though!

Extract **1/2

'Extract' stars Jason Bateman (who I've loved since I was about 8), and Mila Kunis.

This was a weird one... It's about a guy that owns a company that makes extract flavoring. It's just a strange little story of what transpires for his crazy company and his sexless marriage.

There were a few belly laughs, which in my book makes this one worth the watch, despite that it wasn't that great overall.

I would just steer the kids away from this one altogether because it's just weird...

'Extract' had some good laughs though!

Maiden Heist ***

'Maiden Heist' is a lesser known new DVD release starring Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken and William Macy. It's about three museum security guards who cannot bear to part with their favorite works of art which are being traded to a Copenhagen museum.

'Maiden Heist' really had some great performances and several really good laughs. I felt like there was something missing though... like I needed a sub-plot to be thoroughly entertained??

A pretty safe one for the kids, although they may not be interested.

'Maiden Heist' was a good watch!

Inglorious Basterds ***1/2

'Inglorious Basterds' stars Brad Pitt and is directed by Quentin Tarantino. The movie was really entertaining and enjoyable to watch. However, I have put off writing about it for two weeks now because of some fundamental problems with it.

First off, who mis-spells a title on purpose?? Bastards!!! Are they implying a dual meaning or just being different? I don't really care... It just bothers me.

But the major thing that really really bothers me is that I keep foreseeing those stupid people on Jay Leno. They're on the street asking them basic knowledge questions. They all respond that Hitler was killed in a movie theater!! Not how it really happened, people!

The major problem is that it's so well done that there will be an entire generation of stupid people that think it's factual. Generally in fictional period pieces, the characters are just ordinary people; not Adolph Hitler. This bothers me a lot! Fiction with an infamous murderer as a character??

BUT, 'Inglorious Basterds' was very well done; story, acting, locations, effects... it was all good. I've never been able to say that Brad Pitt was Oscar-worthy. He's still not. He does a really good job, but just not great. There were also many other really good performances.

As for the kids, you should pre-screen. There was some freaky, unexpected violence that kind of disturbed me. It might be ok for mature teenagers, but you should watch it first.

Really good watch even though I had major issue with it!
